Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Everyone is a little bit more environmentally conscious on Earth Day, e.g.; they turn off the lights more frequently throughout the day, they try to use less toilet paper or paper towels that day, or they’ll try to drive as little as possible so as not to use up too much gas. However, I would like to see people decreasing their carbon footprint every day, not just on Earth Day. If it’s something they truly care about, then they won’t just flock to church on Easter, they’ll make it a religious habit.

Earth Day shouldn’t be an excuse or a reminder to be more conscious, it should be something people think about daily. I know I do. With our earth dying, it’s hard for it not to be at the forefront of my mind. I don’t claim to know everything about climate change (I’m still learning a lot), but I’ve become passionate about it, especially when I consider bringing children into this world. It seems like a pretty bleak future for them in the current state of this earth.

I know it’s not much, but I try to reuse the plastic in our house. If we have leftover plastic containers, I try to put them to use for something else. The same goes for glass, but that’s not as prevalent in our products probably because it’s more expensive to make. It’d be great if there was more glass vs. plastic in our products because plastic waste is a huge issue we face as humans, but for now, we can only make do with what we are given, and what we are given is plastic more often than not. So try to reuse it if you can! I just learned that plastic can’t be recycled (due to the fact that there are so many different compounds in each piece of plastic, among other reasons) so the reuse of it is so important! I know there’s so much more I can do to reduce my waste, like composting and getting an electric car, but hopefully, that’s to come in the future.

I know, too, that the methane cows produce is a big issue, so if people can limit the number of times they have beef, that’d be ideal. I’m sure no matter what, meat will be produced in this country, so one person not eating meat isn’t a lot, but it counts for something. I’m vegetarian and even though I’m not putting a ginormous dent in the meat-producing business, at least I’m doing what I can. And eating less meat can be better for your health, but that’s for another post.
